Apply For Emergency Broadband Benefit – As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to drive reliance on distance learning, remote work and telehealth, broadband connectivity is essential. For those in low-income families, staying online means choosing between other needs. Congress created the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program (“EBBP”) to address affordability, one of the main barriers to adoption.
Run by the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”), this program offers monthly rebates to offset the cost of Internet broadband subscriptions, helping those struggling with connectivity find ways to stay connected. Additionally, the program provides a discount on a laptop, desktop or tablet.
Apply For Emergency Broadband Benefit
The Emergency Broadband Benefit is a monthly discount of up to $50 on broadband service, increasing to $75/month on tribal land. Eligible families can sign up for service from authorized providers. If a customer regularly selects an eligible plan that costs $50 or less per month, the customer will receive that service for free, at least until the last month of EBBP support service.
Emergency Broadband Benefit Continues
Eligible services are not limited to stand-alone Internet services. Discounts may apply to bundled services that include voice, text and service packages that include equipment such as routers, modems or networks. However, eligible bundled services do not include video services and traditional cable television services.
The program offers a service provider rebate of up to $100 if a household purchases a connected device provided by the service provider. These devices are limited to laptops, desktops or tablets. The program requires participants to contribute $10 to $50 toward the cost of the device.
Applicants should be aware that existing outstanding payments to broadband providers do not disqualify a household under EBBP. Also, participation in EBBP does not affect participation in the Lifeline program. Conversely, being a Lifeline subscriber does not disqualify a household from participating in the EBBP.
There are several ways a home can qualify for EBBP rebates. A home is eligible when it meets one of the following conditions:
Emergency Broadband Benefit Is Transitioning To The Affordable Connectivity Program
If a household is already participating in Lifeline, it does not need to apply for the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program or submit any new documents to prove eligibility. Applicants need to sign up for a plan from their current broadband provider or request to sign up for a plan. Existing Lifeline subscribers can maintain their current Lifeline benefits while adding to the plan available through EBBP.
People who are not currently participating in Lifeline should apply for EBBP through the National Lifeline Verifier. Applications can be completed online or by mail. Applicants must provide their full name, date of birth, address and one of the following identification documents: social security number, social security number, government-issued ID, passport, driver’s license or taxpayer identification number.
After that, applicants can immediately find out if they are eligible for the Emergency Broadband Relief Scheme. If the National Verifier is unable to automatically verify eligibility, applicants may be required to upload additional documents. Broadband providers can also assist with the application process.
The FCC has not set a date for registration to begin. However, enrollment is expected to begin in May 2021. Six months after the Secretary of Health and Human Services determines that the pandemic emergency has ended or when the $3.2 billion appropriated by Congress runs out, whichever occurs first. first Providers must specifically notify participants that the program is ending, at least 30 days before the EBBP rebate ends. Emergency Broadband Benefit Program: A Quick Look
As of 31/12/21, the Emergency Broadband Benefit has been replaced by the Affordable Connectivity Programme. The monthly benefit drops from $50 to $30, plus a one-time rebate of up to $100 on the purchase of a laptop, desktop or tablet. Anyone with an income at or below 200% of the federal poverty line is eligible.

Some American families may soon find some relief from the cost of Internet service. A new government scheme aims to help eligible families get online by providing monthly financial credits and computer rebates for broadband services.
On February 25, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the implementation of the Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB Program) to help subsidize the cost of Internet service for eligible low-income households. The program began on May 12, 2021 and will cost $3.2 billion.
Federal Communications Commission Adopts Emergency Broadband Benefit Program For The Navajo Nation
The program provides eligible households with a $50 incentive internet credit on their internet account each month. This credit increases to $75/month. For those living on tribal lands. All eligible households can get up to $100 toward a laptop, desktop or tablet, but they must pay between $10 and $50 and purchase it through their Internet Service Provider (ISP). Unfortunately, Cox and Windstream are the only major providers that have so far chosen to use part of the benefit tool.
This is a temporary program to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The benefit ends when the fund runs out of money or six months after the Department of Health and Human Services declares the end of a state of emergency due to COVID-19, whichever comes first.
Once the program opens, you will be able to apply through your ISP or the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) that administers the Lifeline and EBB programs. The FCC will then verify your eligibility for the program and the $50/mo. The discount will be applied to your online account. From there, the FCC will reimburse your ISP directly. According to the FCC, it is “the nation’s largest program” to help connect low-income families to affordable Internet.
“This is a program that helps those at risk of digital disconnection. It helps people sitting in cars in parking lots get a Wi-Fi signal to go online for work,” said FCC Acting Chair Jessica Rosenworcel. “It helps those sitting outside the library with a laptop to get a wireless signal for distance learning.” It helps those who are worried about choosing between paying their broadband bill and paying rent or buying groceries.
If your 2020 gross household income — the total pretax income of everyone living in your household — is 135% or less of the federal poverty guidelines, you qualify for the EBB program and the Stimulus Internet Credit. Here’s what that cut looks like in each state:
If your gross household income is less than the numbers listed above, you may be able to receive $50/month. Network capacity immediately after the FCC launched the program on May 12.
In addition to income eligibility, you may qualify for emergency broadband benefits if you are already enrolled in an eligible program. Here are the programs that give you access to grants:
That’s a big list. But keep in mind that you only need to participate in one of the above programs to be eligible for the EBB program.
Emergency Broadband Benefit: Get Up To $50 Off Your Internet Bill
The FCC says anyone who has suffered a “significant loss of income” due to a job loss or furlough as of February 29, 2020 is eligible for the EBB program. The only requirement is that their 2020 household income be $99,000 for single filers and $198,000 or less for joint filers.
Anyone who lives on tribal land and meets one of the above qualifications can receive a $75/month discount. in their online account.
Fortunately, many qualified customers are automatically accepted through other programs. If you are already a Lifeline user, you need to log in to EBB with your current service provider or request service from a new service provider. USAC recommends that you talk to your Lifeline service provider about the Internet service available to you or contact an Internet service provider that participates in the program.
What if you are not enrolled in Lifeline but have used a low-income or COVID-19 assistance plan with your network provider? In that case, you can still be automatically approved if the provider has obtained an FCC license. You should contact your service provider directly for more information.

If you already have Internet service at home, the FCC recommends contacting them directly to access EBB. They can submit your application through a national examiner or through their own eligibility process.
When the program opens on May 12, you can apply online at GetEmergencyBroadband.org. The online portal accepts applications in both Spanish and English. If you go this route you will receive a request for approval or additional documents.
