Bank Of America Card Application Status – Sometimes I get bored while hunting for points and miles and/or great deals. And there’s usually a lesson or two to learn. That’s why I like to share these stories with readers, like I did recently when I bought a new grill (see: 3 Lessons from My Oversized Extreme Kit). Today’s story is about my broken Virgin Atlantic credit card application…

Ever since I wrote the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard Deep Dive: Maximize Earnings and Status post, I’ve been wanting to get another Virgin Atlantic credit card. In this post, I showed how there were different ways to maximize points earnings (up to 2.1 miles per dollar on all spend) and status earned. The easiest option is to have two cards. And the fact that the 75K offer is back definitely helped spur me on. I was going to use the techniques I described in my “Spending Automation” post to make sure I spent $2,500 on each card every month for 10 months of the year. This way I earn 75,000 signup bonuses and maintain elite status with little effort and earn 2.1 miles per dollar on an ongoing basis.

I have heard from readers and read here and there that Bank of America has become sensitive to the number of open credit card accounts each person has. When I entered this app, I had 5 personal cards and 3 business cards in my bank. Before applying for a new card, I had to let go of a few cards and maybe even reduce the credit limit on my holders.

Credit Card Rewards Aren’t Free. Shoppers Don’t Care.

It’s been a while since I saw him. Normally, applications are put on hold before a decision is made, but this rejection was given immediately:

I called the reconsideration hotline (found here) and asked for a reconsideration of the decision. The analyst put me on hold for a very long time, but finally came back saying that the decision remained the same: rejected. He said that since I had 5 open accounts they could not open another one.

I asked the analyst if the decision could be reconsidered if one or two cards were closed. I was hoping he could do it over the phone right away, but no. He said I can close the papers and then apply again. I specifically asked if it could be done the same day and he said yes. He cautiously told me that he could not promise that I would be approved, but seemed to encourage the approach.

Does Bank of America have a hard limit of 5 cards? The analyst couldn’t or wouldn’t tell me, but it seems they have that limit for me if not for everyone. Earlier this year, Doctor of Credit reported that Bank of America was closing accounts when people had more than 4 cards. However, most of the data points were specific to MLB (Major League Baseball) cards. And many commentators (myself included) have stated that it is possible to get and hold 5 cards.

The important discovery here is that business cards do not fit into this limit. I have three Bank of America business cards, but the analyst didn’t add them when he said I already had 5 accounts.

My next step was to call Bank of America to cancel a few cards. I had decided to cancel my personal Alaska card (now keeping the Business Alaska card) and one of my two Amtrak cards (cancelling one with the annual fee, but keeping the other). I initially asked to cancel the Alaska card, but was offered 2,500 miles to keep it. I asked about bigger offers, but they didn’t come. 2,500 miles isn’t a lot, but the annual fee isn’t due until January, so I have plenty of time to cancel this card later. I accepted the offer and closed both of my Amtrak cards instead. They didn’t offer me anything to store those cards.

I waited about an hour after I canceled both Amtrak cards and then reapplied for the Virgin Atlantic card. I knew that applying on the same day with BOA would only result in one big hit to my credit report, so there would be no downside to applying again. The result this time was encouraging. Instead of an immediate rejection, the application was under review!

I called for reconsideration (found here) and asked for an immediate decision on the new application. The analyst told me that my second request was automatically closed as a duplicate. Then explain why the first application was rejected (too many Bank of America accounts). I asked him to open a second application for reconsideration as I had two papers closed after the initial application. He said it doesn’t make a difference because my credit report doesn’t show canceled accounts for at least a month (which is true). I told him what the first analyst told me (that I could cancel and reapply the same day) but he was adamant. However, I asked him to reopen the app. He put me on hold for that. When he got back on the line he said my application was rejected due to too many open accounts.

At this point I was frustrated and gave up. I had planned to go get another card that day (maybe another Alaska card for example) if the Virgin Atlantic card application was successful, but at that point I was too burned out on the process. Also, it didn’t seem likely that they would approve me for another card since they don’t have one.

A few days later it occurred to me that this second analyst could have reopened the original app and not the other one. Maybe he was right about the number of open accounts, maybe not. Maybe the original number of papers was already linked to the original request and that’s why the first analyst told me that I had to apply again.

Lesson learned: I should have insisted on reopening the duplicate app. I could and had to read him the specific reference number to make sure he was looking at the correct number.

A week later I discovered I was right about that mistake. I received four letters from Bank of America. Three had the same reference number (from my first application) and claimed I had “sufficient accounts with us and/or our affiliates”. The fourth letter referred to the second request: “Our records indicate that this is a duplicate request, so it will not be processed.”

The fact that the second application was initially pending rather than immediately rejected suggests to me that the fact that I had deleted two papers made a difference on the same day. Unfortunately, I could not try this with a successful reflection due to a miscommunication with another analyst.

In general, what happened was not a big deal for me. I got the hard pull on my Experian report, but I’m finding that the hard pulls are having a short-term negative effect on my credit score and ability to get new cards. I can ask again to reopen the other app, but I think they will make another hard pull. If so, there is no point in me simply reapplying. I’m in no rush to get the card so I’ll wait until the Amtrak cards close on my Experian report.
