College Application Deadline – Most application deadlines for the fall semester fall between September and January, depending on the school. The most common college application deadline is November 15th. Whether you’re trying to beat early decision deadlines, transfer deadlines, or regular decision deadlines, this guide will help you figure out when to submit your application.
High school students applying for financial aid or scholarships should also be aware of the different application deadlines for the regular application process.
College Application Deadline
There are four different types of college admissions deadlines: Regular Decision, Early Action, Early Decision, and Current Admission.

Whichever timeline you choose, having a strong college essay will help you no matter where you apply (says College Essay Guy).
With the regular decision deadline, students apply on a specific date and receive a decision on a clearly stated, later date. The most common RD decision deadline is January 1st. However, the regular decision deadline for UC schools is earlier, on November 30.
Some schools have RD deadlines that fall earlier, like December 1st, and others fall later in January or February. For most RD applications, you will apply through the Common Application or the Coalition Application. UC schools and some Texas schools have their own application systems called UC Application and ApplyTexas, respectively. Each school then has a set date when they release their admissions decision, usually in March or April.
Meaning that if you get into the school you apply to, you don’t have to go there. That’s why we at College Essay Guy suggest applying to 8-10 schools if you’re going the RD route. This decision-making process aims to ensure stability, predictability and neutral decision-making.
An Educator’s Guide To Application & Test Deadlines
Yes Assuming you have a balanced list of colleges and apply during the typical application schedule (meaning you’re not applying during current admissions, see below), you’ll be applying to somewhere between 6-9 RD schools. The hard part is choosing which school you want to apply EA/ED to (if any).
The early action deadline is intended for students who want to complete the admissions process at the beginning of their senior year. With early action, the school has a set early application date and a later date to release its admissions decision, earlier than the regular decision schedule. However, the application of an early action, like a regular decision, is not binding. Applying for Early Action does not restrict a student from applying to other schools or for scholarships and financial aid, unlike Early Decision.
Most schools with early action deadlines fall in early to mid-November, and they release their admissions decisions in mid-December. Because they are not binding, early action applications do not generally increase the admission rate and usually have the same acceptance rate as the regular decision application. The biggest reason to apply for early action is simply to submit your application and hear your decision sooner than other application deadlines.
The Early Decision deadline is designed for students who have a strong desire to attend a particular school early in the application process. NACAC defines early decision as when students “make a commitment to the first-choice institution to which, if accepted, they will definitely enroll and withdraw all other applications.” In other words, an early decision application is binding, meaning you commit to attending the school if you do.

Like Early Action, the Early Decision application deadline occurs at the beginning of the school year, usually in early November. You will also receive a response to your admission decision early, around mid-December.
School to apply to, and you should not plan to apply to other schools until you know your decision. You technically sign a “contract” (though not a legal contract) saying you understand and will abide by the ED restrictions. There may be some flexibility within these contracts that you can explore with the help of your guidance counselor, but generally schools take ED restrictions very seriously.
Strict early action is somewhere between early decision and early action. With Strict Early Action, students apply to a preferred institution and receive a decision earlier without having to commit to admission. However, there is a ‘strict’ element to this: in certain cases you may be restricted from applying to other Early Decision or Early Action institutions. Although this is not a binding commitment like early decision, you can only apply to this one school early and must apply to all other regular decisions.
Strict early action is often best for students who are somewhere between early decision and early action in terms of their desire to commit to a particular school.
Ways That Procrastinating Can Kill Your College Application Process
Continuous intake is the most flexible process. Institutions review applications upon submission and provide admissions decisions during the admissions phase. There is no set deadline for applying or receiving your admission decision.
Most schools do not offer standing admission, but check your list to see if there are schools you are applying to. Rolling admission may be a good option for you if you decide to apply to college at the last minute.
Ultimately, there is no “best” entry route to take and it all depends on what’s right for you. See this article for more guidance on choosing the right entryway for you.
Once you’ve decided which schools you’re applying to and which application path to choose, you should check to see if those schools require standardized tests. More and more schools are opting for optional tests for their SAT and ACT scoring requirements, meaning that many schools no longer have standardized test deadlines.

However, for schools that still accept tests, the school usually only accepts test scores early enough for the rankers to evaluate and publish the results. This means you need to plan ahead, especially if you plan to implement early decision or early action. For example, here are the latest times you can take the SAT or ACT depending on whether you are applying Early Action/Decision or Regular Decision:

To make sure you prepare on time and on schedule to take any of these exams, we’ve created a guide to creating your study schedule. We recommend that you give yourself a realistic study time, which is probably around three months before you take the exam.
Another important part of the application checklist is asking for letters of recommendation. Like the standardized testing schedule, once you know which schools you’re applying to and when, you’ll know the schedule for when to ask for letters of recommendation.

In general, it’s a good idea to request letters of recommendation at the end of your freshman year to prepare for the upcoming application period, regardless of the application method you’ve chosen. To keep it simple, the sooner you apply, the sooner you should ask.
Don’t forget to ask at the right time. You know how you wait until your parents are in a good mood before you ask them for something? Do this with this. Meaning:
The last part of your application that you need to get through on time is drafting your college essay.
This is the central part of your application. The part of your application that you are likely to spend the most time on. But of course I’d say I’m the college essay guy.

A personal statement is a 500-650 word essay that you send to (presumably) every college you apply to through the Common Application or the Coalition Application. What is its purpose? Jennifer Blask, executive director of international admissions at the University of Rochester, says it well: “To a large extent, a college application is a narrative of things from the past—past grades, old classes, activities the student has been involved in over several years. The essay is an opportunity for students to share who they are today and what they will bring to our campus communities.
Because writing an essay that does all of this requires a lot of revision, it’s best for high school students applying for the fall semester to start their main personal statement in the summer days before applying.
Be sure to use our guide to what colleges look for in a college essay. If you’re looking for a more complete guide, see How to Write a Personal Statement. And here are some examples of what we think are stellar personal statements for additional inspiration.
