So you’ve just decided on the list of colleges you’ll be applying to. You’ve been working on your activities section and your personal statement, and you’ve started looking at some additional essays. But when you get close to submitting your application, you see it. College application fees.

Colleges With No Application Fee By State

Students are often surprised that submitting their college applications usually requires payment to the college or university. Some colleges allow students to apply for free, but other colleges charge students $25 to $90 just to submit an application.

Pro tip: Some colleges do not charge an application fee, or else they offer specific time windows throughout the year when they waive the application fee. Check with your college to see if these types of opportunities are available and, if so, plan to submit your application during the Free Application deadline.

Additionally, the college application process often comes with financial surprises in the form of fees that students may not be aware of at first. In addition to college application fees, students may have to pay tuition or housing fees (which we’ll talk about a little later) or fees to send test scores to colleges from places like ACT and the College Board.

As a result of these unexpected expenses, you may see dollar signs in your mind and may feel anxious.

But here’s the good news: If you and your family can’t afford the application fee, you can actually apply to college for free. This guide will show you how.

How To Get A College Application Fee Waiver

A fee waiver is a form that a student completes on their own and/or with the help of a school counselor or high school official, then submits to the college or university to request that the application fee be “waived” – waived. – Removed! There are several different forms of fee waivers, but most require students to demonstrate that the application fee meets their financial need to be able to apply to the institution – emphasis here

Of course, no one wants to pay the fee, but the college application fee waiver is intended for students and families who would otherwise not be able to apply to college without financial aid.

Other ways of waiving the application fee that do not depend on financial need, we will not necessarily discuss here. For example, some colleges may offer a fee waiver (even virtually) for an eligible program. Sometimes colleges will send you an email. When in doubt, you can always ask the admissions office.

A student must generally meet at least one of the following criteria to receive a fee waiver:

However, a student may be legitimately struggling to pay for college but may not fall into this category. If none of these situations apply to you, but you don’t have the money to put toward college, don’t stop! Most fee waivers allow the student to submit an aid application on their own or have a school official (such as a counselor or principal), college access counselor, financial aid officer, or community leader explain their financial needs.

Students typically need to pursue this option if one of their parents or guardians has recently lost a job and family income has decreased, a family member has died, unexpected expenses have arisen, COVID-19 has presented unexpected costs to your family, or any number of other reasons. This affects your family’s financial situation.

Your next step often depends on which application you use to apply to a college or university. There are several types of fee waivers, and we’ll discuss the most popular based on the college applications they apply to. However, before you begin, just like during the application process, each college maintains its own process and requirements for requesting a fee waiver. While most colleges will likely accept fee waivers, which we’ll look at in a moment, some institutions have their own unique fee waiver process. Boise State, for example, does a great job of setting fee waiver requirements and providing information on how to request a fee waiver.

Pro tip: Before proceeding with the fee waiver process, check the admissions websites for any colleges you’re applying to to learn more about their requirements. You’ll typically find information related to tax waivers listed on their application requirements page (much like our Boise State example). Some institutions (such as Swarthmore College) have even created helpful tools to help you determine if you qualify for a tax exemption and how to obtain it. Also, Google is your friend! You can often find more information about college fee waivers by simply Googling the name of the college and the words “application fee waiver.” If you can’t find the information you need or if it’s unclear, don’t hesitate to contact the college office and speak with a representative to see if you qualify for a fee waiver and how you can apply. .

Now let’s save money for you and your family! Below are the different types of fee waivers and how you can access and submit each one:

There are two main ways to request a fee waiver when using the Common Application. This is the Common App Fae Waiver – and Common App has created a guide to help you understand their fee waiver process. To submit a request to your Common Application, simply follow these steps:

In the “Profile” section of your Common Application, click on the “Common Application Fee Waiver” subsection. If you’ve made it this far in this guide, you probably think you may qualify for a fee waiver, so you should select “Yes” to confirm that you think you qualify for a fee waiver before clicking “Continue.” You will then be asked to select a reason supporting your fee waiver and digitally sign the request. You will also have the option to request additional application guidance from Strive for College if you are interested.

After you complete these steps and click Continue, your school counselor or other school official you designated on the Common Application will receive your request and verify the form and digitally sign it.

There is also what is called a “school-specific fee exemption”. This question can be found in the Member Questions section of the Common Application. You must first add the college to your college list and then you can proceed with their member inquiries. Here’s what it looks like on Swarthmore’s Common App page:

Note that not all colleges will use or offer school-specific fee waivers, but you can check to see if you may qualify to see if this option is available for the colleges on your list. The drop-down list might say, for example, that your fee is waived if you apply through QuestBridge, and if that’s the case, you can usually select that option. Again, you can always email or call the admissions office if you are confused.

When you’re ready to submit your Common Application, you’ll be asked to review and submit your application and provide payment information—but

How To Get A College Application Fee Waiver

Finally, we mentioned that some colleges do not charge fees. The Common App has a helpful research tool to help you narrow down more than 400 colleges that don’t charge an application fee. Of course, there are also colleges that don’t use the Common Application that charge you $0 to apply.

Like the Common Application, you’ll find a Fee Cancellation subsection under the Profile section of your application.

And that’s it! You will see a list of colleges and universities that accept the Coalition Application, which will automatically waive your application fee based on your answers. The pop-up window is useful because you can add additional colleges to your list – with peace of mind that you’ll get a fee waiver at that college. There are no extra steps and you can just go ahead and create an amazing app.
