If your credit card was declined, you have great company. In September 2014, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama went to dinner on their way to New York for the United Nations General Assembly meeting. When the president tried to get the account, the credit card was declined.

Tips For Handling Declined Credit Card Transactions

“I guess I don’t use it enough. So they thought it was a scam,” he said. “I tried to explain to the employee, no, I really think I paid my bills.”

Yes, even the president of the United States has been denied a credit card. If it can happen to one of the most powerful people in the world, it can happen to anyone. Obama managed to laugh after his wife paid the bill, but for most of us, credit card rejection can be a serious matter.

Here are seven reasons why a card might be declined, and what steps you can take to prevent a credit card from being declined.

Credit expert John Ulzheimer, president of the Ulzheimer Group, says you can’t pay more than your limit unless you let the lender approve your loan. But card issuers are moving away from limited payments. In fact, the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau stated in its 2015 report that these fees are “absolutely non-existent.”

To stay within your credit limit, sign up for email or text messages from your card issuer to notify you when you’re approaching your limit.

If a purchase attempt made with your card falls outside of your normal spending habits, it may result in the card issuer rejecting your card. This is designed to prevent fraud.

This happens every once in a while while traveling, especially when in another country. If you make too many purchases from places that don’t fit your usual spending habits, your card may be declined as a way to protect you from fraud.

Notify the card issuer before you travel, especially if you are traveling to another country, to avoid having your card declined when you leave home.

List Of Credit Card Declined Codes & How To Handle Them

Ulzheimer said that if your card has not been used for a while, the card issuer may have closed your account and asked for the card to be declined. It may take several months or even years before your card issuer closes your account. You can contact the card issuer to find out if your account can be reactivated.

To prevent your card from being canceled due to inactivity, try to make purchases with your card from time to time and pay the full balance when the bill arrives.

According to Ulzheimer, another reason your card issuer freezes your account is because you’re behind on your credit card payments. In this case, you have to fulfill your payments, he said. The issuer will then refund your account.

When an issuer thinks your card has been used by a scammer, your account is usually frozen, meaning no action is taken – four Allowed or not – the card can be switched. The organizer will usually notify you of suspicious activity, initiate an investigation, and issue a new document.

Handling Declined Credit Card Transactions

In most cases, the credit card company will not hold you responsible for a single penny for making an unauthorized payment.

You’re looking at a 65-inch flat screen TV. After months of shopping, you finally decided to go ahead and buy. However, the credit card you used for the purchase was declined.

The credit card issuer may have flagged the purchase because of the high price. A major purchase, such as a sofa, diamond ring, or large appliance, may be rejected until the person issuing the documents confirms that you are indeed purchasing the luxury item.

If you already have a card with a new expiration date, simply replace the old card with the new one. (You may need to activate the new card before using it.) If you have not received a new card, you should contact the card issuer immediately to make sure it has not been lost or stolen.

Credit Cards Not Being Authorized Online

It’s easy to make mistakes when your fingers are flying over the keyboard or typing on the phone screen. This is absolutely true when you provide information for a credit card transaction online. Maybe the card number is single digit or you got your address or birthday wrong.

In any case, incorrect information can result in your credit card being declined. Fortunately, it’s easy to fix: either upload the correct data or make sure the data is stored automatically.

A credit card can be declined for a variety of reasons. Whatever the reason, it’s wise to contact your card issuer as soon as you hit bottom. A quick phone call can do the trick; You will usually find a customer service phone number on the back of your card. In other cases, it may take a lot of time to resolve the situation. Make sure you have up-to-date contact information in your ad in case something goes wrong, such as suspected fraud.

Why Is My Credit Card Being Declined?

CompareCards.com conducted a nationwide survey of 1,047 adults in the US who had their credit card declined in the past year. CompareCards.com is the credit card arm of online lending company LendingTree.

About 12% of Americans had a debit or credit card declined in 2017. That’s the 26 million Americans who felt the pain of being told their transactions weren’t going through. The most common reason for a credit card rejection is that the card user has exceeded his limit. However, the second most common reason is fraud prevention. This means that some of these discounts are not the fault of the card user. Instead, transactions marked fraud protection on those accounts.

Finally, the survey asked whether paper manufacturers were embarrassed by the reduction. Most people do, but women worry more than men:

“It’s not fun to have a debit or credit card declined,” said Gary Herman, President of Credit Consolidated. “However, you can avoid this by paying attention to the details of your accounts. The more you know about your information and the more often you check it, the less likely it is to be stolen. It will be rejected during checking.

Why Was My Credit Card Declined? 6 Common Reasons

“All the major credit card companies and most financial institutions have mobile apps,” said Herman. “Even if your card was issued to a small independent bank or credit union, they may have technology that makes it easier to check your balance. This can help you avoid the embarrassment of being rejected for a credit card. It’s better to check your balance first and see if you don’t have any money than listening to the check.”

Herman also encourages people to review the card’s anti-fraud policy. This will help you understand when fraud prevention might be triggered.

“Fraud protection is a good thing, but if it’s outside of your normal shopping habits, it can lead to card issuers refusing certain transactions,” said Herman. “Learn your card’s policy to prevent fraud. If the card is declined, you should usually call customer service. Once you confirm who is using the card, the transaction usually takes place.”
