Victor Valley College Classes – Thirty-four Victor Valley College nursing graduates participated in a graduation ceremony Friday to celebrate the completion of one of the nation’s most elite nursing programs.
The ceremony was held at Sunset Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary in Apple Valley to honor the spring 2021 nursing class. Dressed in traditional white uniforms, the future registered nurses each recited their International Nursing Pledge.

The first line of the pledge reads: “I promise to care for patients with all my skills and understanding, regardless of caste, creed, colour, politics or social status, to spare no effort to save life, alleviate suffering and alleviate suffering . To promote health.”

Dr. Theresa Cicci, director of VVC’s nursing and allied health program, said the traditional pinning ceremony symbolizes all the students have overcome and accomplished throughout their time in the program.
“When you look at service as a nurse, it’s a healing journey,” Sikki said. “It’s not to prevent them or cure them, but to serve them, and be there when they need someone to listen or hold their hand or sit with them.”
Cicci introduced various dignitaries present at the function, including VVC Superintendent / President Dr. Also present are Dan Walden; Board of Trustees President Brandon Wood and Vice President Jennifer Tarpley; Vice President for Instruction Dr. Todd Scott; Dean of Education in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Dr. Hamid Idgahi; and Fred Hunter, CEO of Desert Valley Hospital and Desert Valley Medical Group. She also thanked the family and friends of the candidates who attended.
“I know you’re going to do your best, you’re going to make us proud and if I ever have to go back to the hospital, I hope you take care of me because I trust you,” Walden said.

Class President KC Hendricks recognized members of the California Nursing Students Association cabinet and shared some highlights of the graduates’ experiences at the program.
“Over the last two years we’ve worked on this, played many nights, studied for who knows how many hours, (created) care plans that make my arm feel like it’s going to fall off, exams, finals, missed celebrations with family and friends and are so tired, will it ever end? Do you think so, Hendricks said. “All of these obstacles and challenges have prepared us to become successful, competent and compassionate nurses.”
Hendricks described her colleagues as “wonderful” people from “many different backgrounds,” including CNAs, respiratory therapists, emergency room technicians, surgical technicians, fathers, mothers (one with six daughters), a grandfather and a soon-to-be grandmother. And a student who gave birth to her daughter just days before she started the last semester of the program.
“The strength, determination and sacrifice that we make to stand before you tonight is incredible,” Hendricks told his classmates. “I am inspired by each and every one of you. As we move into the next chapter, I encourage you all to enjoy the moment, take care, be inspired and lead by example.

Class Vice President Samantha Harris presented the “Make a Difference Award” to a faculty or staff member who has made a significant impact on graduates.
“The words our class used to describe this person were supportive, encouraging, professional, caring, classy, stylish, adaptable and honest,” Harris said. On behalf of our entire class, it is our great honor to present the 2021 ‘Make a Difference Award’ to Professor Sylvia Portillo.”
“We extend an extra thank you for your incredible dedication not only to us, but to VVC’s nursing program,” a statement on behalf of the graduating class said. “You will be sorely missed and we thank you again!”
Student Achievement Awards went to the four candidates with the highest grade point average. Samantha Harris was recognized for maintaining the highest academic standards throughout the program, followed by KC Hendricks, Karina Sainz and Veronica Ayala.

Other awards were given to the medically talented students. Medical/Surgical awards were presented to Susana Romo, Obstetrics to Roxana Soto, Pediatrics to Raquel Frazier, Advanced Medical/Surgical to Karissa Hunnicutt and Psychiatric to Brian Chapman.
In California, VVC’s nursing programs have been ranked among the top 5 programs by several surveys, including RegisteredNursing.org, which ranked 4th and praised it for producing “work-ready” graduates.

While classes will be taught online or remotely for the spring semester, in-person student services will be available Monday, May 10, VVC officials said in a statement released Saturday.

“Safety is our number one concern and the guidelines provided by the State of California are strictly followed,” said VVC Superintendent/President Dr. Dan Walden.
VVC officials made the announcement to students and staff Thursday — a day before state and San Bernardino County officials reported the county would move from the highly restricted purple tier of the state’s reopening chart to the more open red tier. The move to red level, planned for Sunday, will allow schools and many local businesses to resume indoor service with modifications.
The county has operated the purple layer, which indicates “widespread” risk of infection, since August. In a separate statement Friday, Corwin Porter, county director of public health, said San Bernardino County’s move into the red zone for “significant” risk follows a 99% drop in COVID-19 cases.
“We’ve seen a steady decline in all key metrics, including hospital admissions, and that decline will continue as we continue to vaccinate more residents each week,” he said.
Porter said San Bernardino County’s current case rate is 5.2 cases per 100,000 residents, well below the statewide purple level of 10 cases and the previous threshold of seven. The county’s positivity rate is 2.8%, he said, while the equity positivity rate is 3.2%.
As of Saturday, San Bernardino County had reported a total of 288,364 cases of COVID-19 and 3,282 virus-related deaths since the pandemic began.
In the meantime, VVC’s services will continue to be offered externally (online, via telephone and e-mail). The following services and offices will also be available on campus beginning May 10: Admissions & Records, Financial Aid, Expanded Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), Associated Student Body (ASB) office, Counseling, RAMS Bookstore, and VVC Library, among others others.
According to Walden, VVC’s Crisis Leadership Team and Reopening Task Force selected the reopening date in consultation with organizations such as the San Bernardino Superintendent of Schools, the Chancellor’s Office of California Community Colleges and the California Department of Public Health.

“Victor Valley College will continue to operate in accordance with state and federal guidelines to keep us all healthy and safe,” Walden said in the statement. “We will provide more information in upcoming communications to explain what the college is doing to ensure staff, students and the public return to a safe campus environment.”
Walden reiterated that the college is not changing the online teaching format for the current semester, and said more information is needed from government agencies and health organizations to determine future plans for face-to-face classes.
At this point, only “critical sector” courses that cannot be taught remotely, including some nursing and respiratory therapy classes, meet face-to-face, VVC officials said, following guidelines from the CDC and the California Community Chancellor’s Office. Followed by these classes.
“We took care of the campus for our students and most of the staff to clean, sanitize and update the facilities, including the campus lake,” Walden said. “We look forward to the day when we can once again welcome students to enjoy our beautiful campus.”

Barstow Community College, meanwhile, puts its courses online during the summer, with some CTE classes available through a hybrid model.
On Saturday, BCC spokeswoman Amanda Simpson said the college hopes to offer in-person services to students, but “we don’t have any dates at this time.”
“BCC has a faculty and student task force that is now finalizing a very detailed and purposefully safe reopening plan to prioritize everyone’s safety and health, as well as building on our analysis of student needs to succeed with online, hybrid and remote methods,” Simpson said .
