Victor Valley Hospital – Victor Valley Global Medical Center is expanding its emergency department at its Eleventh Street campus in Victorville.

Local dignitaries joined KPC Health executives at VVGMC to break ground on the first phase of a multi-phase project that will better serve an estimated 40,000 emergency patients each year.

KPC Health CEO Peter Baronoff welcomed visitors, including physicians, staff and KPC Group founder and president Dr. Kali Chaudhuri to the Oct. 25 event.

The doctor told the audience that VVGMC is expanding even as newspapers are reporting on hospital closures every day.

“I don’t want to talk a lot; I want to talk practically,” said Chaudhuri, who explained that despite the current financial crisis, improving care for the elderly and small urgent care is a priority.

Baronoff also welcomed Victorville Mayor Debra Jones; Joseph W. Brady, Board Director, Victor Valley College; and representatives of State Sen. Scott Wilk and District 1 Supervisor Paul Cook.

The first phase of the project involves renovating the existing facility’s emergency room, adding approximately 6,800 square feet to accommodate an additional 16 beds.

The expanded waiting room will double in size to accommodate 40 visitors, and the newly designed entrance will allow for better access, flow and patient experience.

It will include a new and expanded receiving station and new reception booths, as well as a state-of-the-art CT scanner and control room.

In the proposed second phase, an area of 5,200 square meters that can be expanded with an additional 12 beds is included, as well as the creation of a roundabout and a new entrance suitable for nine ambulances in building number 4.

Rep. Jay Obernolte thanked KPC officials for their investment and told the audience that access to quality health care is essential to the success of the High Desert community.

“You don’t even realize the importance of it until you need it,” said Obernolte, who recounted how as a young parent his son took apart a calculator and stuck a button on the device up his nose.

Obernolt credited the VVGMC staff for calming his and his wife Heather’s nerves and treating their son.

VVGMC CEO Marilyn Drone shared the need to expand the medical center’s services and how the hospital wants to take the lead in growth in the High Desert.

During the event, Drone and KPC leaders repeatedly thanked doctors and medical staff for their commitment to serving the community, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Construction Plans Stalled For New Providence Kaiser Hospital In Victorville

According to KPC officials, the medical center played an important role during the outbreak and the medical staff worked tirelessly to serve many patients.

“The last few years have been difficult for everyone in many ways,” Drone said. “At Victor Valley Global Medical Center, it was difficult, as it is at other hospitals. But the dedication and perseverance of the staff, physicians and community brought it all together, and everyone put it into the care of our patients.”

Drone thanked dozens of individual and organizational partners who supported VVGMC during the pandemic. These included Cal Fire, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Victor Valley College God’s Hand Extended and Home Depot.

Officials also held a moment of silence to acknowledge key family members of medical personnel and those who died during the outbreak.

Dozens of health care workers demonstrated outside Victor Valley Global Medical Center with signs, chants and demands against their hospital’s business owner for problems caused by the pandemic and some that predated it well.

Between 30 and 40 Victor Valley Global workers gathered in a line shortly after the 10:30 a.m. start Thursday. They were joined by United Healthcare Workers West organizers from the Service Employees International Union, where Victor Valley Global workers recently unionized.

The picket targeted KPC Health Inc., a branch of The KPC Group, an investment firm based in Corona. KPC has more than $10 billion in assets, including seven medical centers in Southern California, as well as stakes in other industries such as real estate, education and agriculture, according to its website.

Workers at Victor Valley Global protested what they say is a growing problem of low wages, staffing and care, both overall and compared to other KPC-owned health centers. They say this has created unfair conditions for them and an unsafe environment for their patients.

“We’re going through a lot with this epidemic, and I feel like this HR and the company just don’t want to change,” Christopher Benton, a lab assistant phlebotomist who has worked in Victor Valley for about 12 years, told the Daily. Press it. “They just don’t want to pay.”

The picket was a one-day event.

One focus of the labor region was federal COVID-19 relief money. They alleged that KPC received $51 million, and alleged that the company did not use that money to appreciably improve conditions at Victor Valley Global, despite promises to the contrary.

The Daily Press could not publicly confirm whether KPC received the $51 million. The KPC did not respond to a request for comment on Thursday.

Some of the workers protested on their day off. Others jumped in after the teams finished. Many employees who were paying attention to the clock stopped to pick up t-shirts supporting the protest before returning to the office.

Thursday’s picketers drew the support of many passers-by, who slowed down to honk their horns and pumped their fists out their windows before continuing down 11th Street in Victorville. The workers swung cowbells and chanted things like, “What do we want? Correct contracts! When we want? Now!”

Benton said that because “we’re just underpaid, understaffed,” many of his former colleagues quit and took the same jobs at other KPC-owned facilities, but with better contracts. That, he and other workers said, has left experience, manpower and morale gaps at Victor Valley Global that are not being addressed.

COVID-19 is accelerating these problems, as well as employee frustrations about them, they said. Benton said Victor Valley Global workers were only given one N95 mask per week when the outbreak began. Others said that even today, PPE is reused in a way that ultimately defeats the purpose of the PPE.

Negotiations to improve contracts began when workers sent a list of demands last May. It was hoped that Victor Valley Global could receive the same conditions as workers at other KPC centers.

Still, the company was said to have stalled in negotiations, proposing terms different from those demanded by workers and then rejecting those terms when workers accepted them.

Tabitha — who declined to give her last name and whose respiratory duties span multiple departments at the hospital — said she has worked at Victor Valley Global for seven years. He says he hasn’t received a single raise from the salary he started with during that time.

When the outbreak began, Tabitha said nearby hospitals were giving workers bonuses of $30 to $50 an hour. However, aside from a pay raise for some nursing staff, Tabitha said “we got nothing” at Victor Valley Global.

“A hospital cannot function without every department fighting,” he said. “We’ve lost a lot of patients to COVID and it’s affected all of us mentally, physically and emotionally. It would be nice if they got some kind of recognition from the hospital and that’s what we’re trying to fight for here.

Known as “Delivery Land”, the renovated facility has a kingdom theme, so every baby born at Delivery Land VVGMC is a king or queen. Expectant parents are placed in one room, in each theme or in a different part of the kingdom. The unit has been completely renovated with new paint, flooring, aesthetics and appliances.

Lovella Sullivan, vice president of marketing, business development and special programs, said the best thing about VVGMC is the many services it offers to the community. Sullivan said the center has been recognized nationally for being in the top five percent for maternity care.

According to Sullivan, plans for Delivery Land began 18 months ago when he and the rest of VVGMC sat down to discuss their new unit.

“We sat down with our CEO and talked about how we could build our labor and delivery unit and make it a convenient and special experience for moms-to-be,” Sullivan said. “So we came up with the idea for Delivery Land and it just grew from there and became a kingdom.”
