The Nasdaq 100, which includes about 100 companies (many of them in the technology industry), gained about 5% in 2016. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some big movers in the space.

NVIDIA (NVDA 1.45%), Applied Materials (AMAT -0.98%), and Linear Technology (LLTC) are the top tech stocks in the index this year, and all have outperformed the index.

We still have a few months before the end of the year, but let’s take a look at why these top tech stocks are doing well today:

NVIDIA makes graphics processing units (GPUs) and graphics cards for PCs, and dominates the space. The company has over 70% of the current discrete GPU market, while its main competitor, Advanced Micro Devices, holds the remaining 30%.

Its share price, on fire since the beginning of the year, rose more than 90% year to date. Investors have been enjoying the company’s revenue growth and expansion into new and promising markets.

NVIDIA had a record revenue of $1.43 billion in fiscal year Q2 2017, an increase of 24% year-over-year. About 55% of this revenue comes from the gaming segment, but other revenue segments are also growing.

NVIDIA is quickly becoming a major player in the driverless car space, where the GPU is used as the main processing unit. GPUs are ideal for autonomous vehicles because the vehicle must process large amounts of visual (and semantic) data to drive itself.

The company only earned $119 million from the auto industry, despite growing 67% year over year. The automakers will eventually pay off with increased income, but for now, investors reaping the benefits of NVIDIA’s gaming dominance and the latest release of four new graphics cards in the past few months, there should be continued income from gambling.

The company’s orders increased 37% year-over-year in the second quarter (the highest order volume in 15 years) and investors pushed the stock price up with them. Applied Content is up 47% year-to-date.
